Yellowstone National Park is an amazing place for children and families to visit. It has some of the most incredible landscapes in the world, and it’s also home to some of the largest mammals on earth, including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, elk, and moose.
When you’re traveling through Yellowstone with kids, you’ll want to make sure they see some of the park’s natural features on their own time. The first stop should be Old Faithful, where you can watch the geyser erupt at 9:30 every hour from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Next up is the Upper Geyser Basin Trail, which will take you past some hot springs and bubbling mud pots. This trail is only about a mile long and takes about 15 minutes to walk through or bike on.
The top things to do in Yellowstone National Park with kids
The park is located in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming and Montana, with geysers and hot springs scattered through its forests. If you’re looking for a unique vacation experience with your kids that also provides educational value, then Yellowstone National Park should be at the top of your list!
Hiking Trails
There are several hiking trails that you can take in Yellowstone National Park with your kids. These trails range from short walks to hikes that can take up to three days to complete. You can find these trails throughout the park, but some of the best ones are near Old Faithful Geyser and the Lamar Valley hot springs area. If you’re looking for a shorter hike that won’t take more than an hour or so then try one of these:
Mammoth Hot Springs Trail
This is one of my favorites because it’s only 1 mile long and you get to see two geothermal features along its route: Mammoth Hot Springs and Shoshone Lake. This trail is only about half way through its loop so if you want more information about what else there is around here check out my guide on where else to go in Yellowstone National Park with kids!
Old Faithful – If you want to get closer to nature than ever before, Old Faithful is the place for you. This geyser erupts every 90 minutes between April and October, at 9:30 AM and 3 PM (4 PM in summer). The eruption lasts about 4 minutes and gives visitors amazing views of the surrounding area as well as a chance to see the steam rising from the ground after the eruption ends.
Grizzly & Bison Viewing
The Grizzly and Bison viewing is a must-do activity for anyone traveling to Yellowstone National Park. You can take your pick of viewing areas, including the Lamar Valley and the Yellowstone Backcountry Campground. The best times to see these animals are in the spring and early summer (April through July) when they are most active.
If your kids are interested in seeing animals up close, this is the activity for them! It’s especially important these days because of how many people have been killed by grizzlies or bison over the years.
Hayden Valley
Hayden Valley is a popular place to visit in Yellowstone National Park, especially for families with kids. It’s home to a variety of wildlife, including bison and elk, as well as geysers that are the perfect backdrop for photos.
The best way to explore Hayden Valley is on foot; you can walk along the trail or drive up into the valley from the park entrance near Old Faithful. You’ll want to stay on the trail so you don’t get too close to any bears or bison, but if you do wander off it’s not too far before you find yourself back on track again.
If you’re looking for something else out of the ordinary, try your hand at berry picking at boardwalks near Yellowstone Lake or take a walk along Firehole Canyon and watch wildlife such as bison and elk graze on grasses on either side of the trail.
Yellowstone National Park is a place where you can have a great time with your family, and that doesn’t have to be about the animals. The park has so many activities for kids, whether it’s hiking, camping or sightseeing. The beauty of Yellowstone is that it truly is a place where everyone can be happy (and safe).
