Santorini’s best kept secrets: 5 unique things
Santorini is home to some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. It’s also known for its rich history and distinct architecture. Here are 5 unique things to do and see in Santorini:
Akrotiri Archaeological Site
If you’re looking for something truly unique to do and see in Santorini, the Akrotiri Archaeological Site is a must-see.
Akrotiri was discovered in 1967 by Spyridon Marinatos and has since been excavated by the University of Athens. The site was buried under volcanic ash following the eruption of Thera (Santorini’s peak) around 1600 BC.
The site contains the remains of what is believed to have been a wealthy town with streets, houses, and workshops. It also contains large public buildings that are believed to have been used for religious ceremonies, as well as numerous artifacts, including pottery and tools. The site itself is thought to have been destroyed by the same volcanic eruption that buried it in ash.
Ancient Thira
Ancient Thira is a small island in the Cyclades archipelago, which is part of the Greek islands. It’s one of the most famous places to visit in Santorini, and it’s not hard to see why.
Ancient Thira was originally named Thera, and it was first settled by Minoan settlers between 3000 and 2000 B.C., making it one of the oldest inhabited islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The Minoans built a city on top of a hill called Akrotiri, which was destroyed by an eruption around 1600 B.C. The people abandoned their city and left it buried under ash for thousands of years until excavations began in 1967.
Today, visitors can explore the remains of Akrotiri’s buildings and homes, which were preserved by the volcanic ash that fell over everything when Mount Thera erupted. You can also see artefacts from this time period at museums like the Archaeological Museum of Thera (also known as the Museum of Ancient Thira).

Stalactites and stalagmites
Stalactites and stalagmites are two of the most unique formations in the world. They are formed when water or a mineral-rich solution drips from the ceiling of a cave, creating a cone shape. This is how we get stalactites and stalagmites.
And you can see them in Santorini! The island has several caves with these beautiful formations, including Thira Cave, which is located near Fira. The cave has been open to visitors since 2010 and offers both guided tours and self-guided tours for anyone looking for something educational or fun to do on their visit to this beautiful island.
In addition to being educational and fun, seeing these amazing formations will give you an idea of just how far back the history of Santorini goes—they’ve been here for thousands of years!
Oia Lighthouse
The Oia Lighthouse is one of the most iconic and beautiful structures in Santorini. It stands out as an architectural marvel, and it’s easy to see why: the lighthouse was built in 1912 by a German architect named Gerhard Munthe. The white stone building is located right on top of a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, so you can take in sweeping views of the island while you’re there.
The lighthouse is open to visitors from sunrise until sunset (and later if there are special events), but it’s best to arrive early before it gets too crowded with tourists. Once you’ve finished exploring the inside of the lighthouse, you can walk down to the edge of the cliff for an even better view!
Mavros Kolimbithres Beach
Mavros Kolimbithres Beach is a long, sandy beach with crystal clear water. The beach is located in the south of Santorini and is well-known for its beautiful landscape, which includes impressive rock formations and caves. The beach is also known for its white sand and shallow waters, making it ideal for families with small children.
The beach also offers plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy during their stay. There are several restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood as well as various water sports, including diving and snorkeling. The area is also popular with hikers who want to explore the surrounding countryside on foot or by bicycle.
Santorini is a beautiful island with many sights to see. From the volcanic caldera and black-sand beaches to the famous windmills and ancient archaeological sites, there’s something for everyone.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing vacation or an adventurous getaway, Santorini has it all!
